A collaborative effort of ReActiv WP3 and WP1 has won the Best Bauxite Residue Paper Award at ICSOBA 2022!
The paper titled “Co-calcination of Bauxite Residue with Low-grade Kaolin in Pursuit of an Economic and High-quality Supplementary Cementitious Material”. The co-calcination process of bauxite residue is made economically relevant by using low-grade kaolinitic clay as an additive to bauxite residue before calcination. The loss in performance as supplementary cementitious material (SCM) is limited with respect to bauxite residue co-calcined with pure kaolinite and the compressive strength evolution of mortars is similar to when calcined low-grade kaolinitic clay is used as SCM (without bauxite residue).
In other words, an SCM with desirable quality was obtained using the blend of bauxite residue and low-grade clay. The economic relevance was further underlined by the modeled flow sheet; the necessary equipment and expertise are trivial in the cement and alumina industry. This gives a promising implementation potential of the technology.
